Anyone - regardless of age - getting their first drivers license in Florida must complete the Drug and Alcohol Course. Most new drivers are teenagers getting their learners permit but many are adults getting their first drivers license. Regardless the DATA Course, which teaches new drivers how drugs and alcohol effect your ability to drive must be completed before a new driver can apply for a Florida Learners Permit or Drivers License.

Regardless of the name, completing one of these courses is the first step toward getting a Florida Drivers License. Once a DATA course is completed the second step is to complete the DMV Test. The DMV Test is officially known as the knowledge exam.

Drivers License Testing
The drivers license test is given to determine the following:
Vision Test
If you wear glasses or contact lenses to pass the vision test you will be required to wear them when driving. This will be indicated on your license with restriction code A.

To pass the vision test you must have 20/40 vision or better in each and both eyes with our without corrective lenses.
If your vision is 20/200 in one eye, you must have 20/40 vision in the other eye with or without corrective lenses.
The DMV Test
The DMV test is 50 questions. Typically about 5 of the questions are on Road Signs and the other 45 questions are on Rules and Regulations of driving in Florida.
Answers are presented in a multiple choice format. You must answer 40 questions correct on the DMV test to pass.

Reporting an Unsafe Driver
Any physician, person or agency can report a driver who may be unsafe to operate a motor vehicle as a result of a medical condition. The report should be made in writing, giving the full name, date of birth, address and a description of the alleged physical or mental disability that could affect the driving ability of any person over 15 years of age. Form 72190 may be used to report these concerns. These reports are kept strictly confidential and shall be used only to determine the qualifications of the individual to operate a motor vehicle on Florida’s highways. No civil or criminal action may be brought against any physician, person or agency for providing this information.
Medical Identification Bracelet Driving Requirement
The Division of Motorist Services can place an indicator on your driver license and record to show that you are required to wear a medical identification bracelet while operating a motor vehicle. Visit your local driver license service center to obtain this indicator.
Temporary Vision Issues and Driving Privilege
To reinstate your driving privilege, please submit a “Report of Eye Examination,” completed by your eye doctor, showing your vision acuity meets the Florida requirements for licensure. You may also print the “Report of Eye Examination” form 72010 here, or obtain a copy at your local driver license service center. This report can be mailed to:

You will then receive a letter from the Division of Motorist Services, which you will take to any driver license service center in your area to obtain a reinstated driver license.
If you fail to submit a vision report upon request by FLHSMV, your driver license will be revoked. If requested by FLHSMV to submit a medical report, you must mail the required medical information to:

The Medical Board will make a recommendation to the department and the department will advise you of the decision.
